Arizona State Credit Union’s Shred-A-Thon Makes Lasting Community Impact
Northern Arizona residents unite in fight against identity theft
PHOENIX, Ariz. –Arizona State Credit Union’s seven Shred-A-Thon events united Northern Arizona residents as they shredded and recycled sensitive documents to fight against identity theft.
Over seven months, nearly one thousand people attended to shred their piles of old documents, including one resident who dropped off crates of tax forms that dated as far back as the 1970s. At each event, community members expressed their appreciation as they watched the shredding machine destroy their papers on the spot.
Lines wrapped around the parking lots before the events began, even with unwelcome weather at two of the locations. At several branches, such large crowds and thousands of pounds of documents to shred left the Shred It trucks filled to capacity before the official event end time.
“When more than 32,000 pounds of paper were recycled throughout this year’s Shred-A-Thon, it’s easy to see the need for such events in the Arizona communities we serve,” said David E. Doss, President/CEO of Arizona State Credit Union. “The Credit Union looks to these types of initiatives to promote sustainability and help support the local communities.”
The Shred-A-Thon began April 12 at the Cottonwood branch and ended October 11 at the Prescott Valley branch. Events were also held at the Credit Union’s Prescott, Chino Valley and Flagstaff branches and were open to all members of the communities. Those attending were encouraged to bring old documents, including bank statements, tax returns, medical bills, credit card statements and other personal documents, to shred and recycle.
Arizona State Credit Union offers free electronic statements and bill pay to help fight identity theft. The Credit Union welcomed over 100 new members during the Shred events, where more than 163 trees were saved as a result of community recycling efforts.
